When you start looking for a property in Leigh or the surrounding area you will want to know something about the town and so we have a short summary here which we hope will also be valuable to you when looking for somewhere to live.
Leigh is a small town, within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, the most westerly district of Greater Manchester, England. Leigh has a population of around 43,000 and is 6 miles south-east of Wigan and 12 miles west of Manchester. It is ideally placed between the north-west's major motorway routes for access to the north, south, east and west with Manchester, Liverpool and Wales all with easy reach. The M6 and M60, M61, M62 and M58 are all within 6 miles or so of leigh. Atherton has a railway station and is convenient for access by train into Manchester.
Originally noted for agriculture and through the industrial revolution, cotton-spinning and mining. Leigh boasts the inventor of the Spinning Jenny Leigh's industrial past is still evident in the town although now superceeded by growing retail and residential sectors. Leigh boasts a small shopping mall with a popular indoor market and a retail park with a variety of stores including two large supermarkets.
On the outskirts of the town, its mining past has, through subsidence, created flashes (lakes) to the south and west. Pennington Flash Country Park, is less than a mile south-west of Leigh, with a variety of well maintained paths catering for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club is a thriving club, popular with sailing enthusiasts. The nature reserve is one of the premium bird watching sites in the north-west with over 230 species of bird.
Leigh has a new sports village on the outskirts of the town centre which houses the Rugby League ground and nearby is Leigh Golf Club, a 9 hole golf course. 
The town centre has a substantial number of terraced properties which are priced to attract first-time buyers. Pennington is more noted for larger detached and semi-detached aimed at second-time buyers.
Leigh and the surrounding area has comprehensive bus services, no shortage of good primary and secondary schools throughout the town and an impressive library.
